Responsive Web Design - What are the advantages

These days the internet is not just being accessed by computers, it can be accessed using mobile phones, e-readers, netbooks, tablets, televisions and games consoles.

It is just not feasible to create a version of your website for each and every one of them, nor is it possible to test on every device (time and cost prohibitive).  So would it not be easier to have a single version of your website that could work everywhere ?  Well new technologies are coming along all the time, and responsive web design does exactly this.

Why, is it so hard you may ask.  Well in the old days we had printed material, but it did not change, in other words an A4 leaflet was always an A4 leaflet, it didn't stretch or shrink, and all items remained in the same position for the whole print run.  The number, type and capabilities of the devices used to access the internet are vast, and each one has a different standard for displaying your website.

So a website that is designed to be responsive will be able to adapt its design and layout to fit the specifications of the device its being viewed on. It does this by dynamically adapting to different screen sizes / resolutions and reformatting the positioning and look of the constituent elements of the website.

So what appears on a traditional computer monitor to be a website with large images across through three columns on a computer screen, will appear to have smaller images in a single column on a mobile screen.

Responsive web design is going to be important, and one thing for sure is that if you are going to attract more and more customers, you will need your website to be accessible by devices other than the traditional computer.

Here are some of the advantagaes:

  • Accessible 24/7.  A lot of your potential visitors will be mobile. If your website is not accessible to this growing group, then you could be losing out to your competition.
  • Provide the same level of features, ease of use, navigation to all viewing devices.  The need to have a seperate mobile site with limited content is removed, unless you have a mobile specific application.
  • Responsive web design - one web site, all your content and links in one place, great for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
